NATO discusses scenarios for ending Russia's war against Ukraine - Bloomberg
Some NATO countries have begun considering various scenarios for ending Russia's war against Ukraine, with most leaning toward the option of negotiations, Bloomberg reports.
The agency notes that the governments of several NATO countries have begun considering various scenarios for ending the war in Ukraine. These discussions include security guarantees that would protect Ukraine without provoking Russian President Vladimir Putin.
According to a Bloomberg source, one possible scenario involves establishing a demilitarized zone. A senior NATO diplomat stated that European forces would likely oversee and patrol such a zone if implemented.
Another high-ranking Western diplomat mentioned that these discussions come amidst recognition of Ukraine's unstable situation, with an understanding that negotiations should begin soon.
Bloomberg also reported that for European allies, these scenarios represent an opportunity to demonstrate to newly elected US President Donald Trump the EU's ability to remain influential if ceasefire negotiations take a concrete shape.
The report highlights that these discussions occurred as NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte sought to focus on increasing arms deliveries to Ukraine, sidelining any immediate ceasefire considerations.
"We must do more than just keep Ukraine in the fight. We must provide enough support to change the trajectory of this war once and for all," Rutte stated.
The NATO chief emphasized that altering the trajectory of the conflict means ensuring Ukraine holds a strong position along the current western-moving front lines.
Potential negotiations between Russia and Ukraine
Newly elected US President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed his intention to initiate talks between Ukraine and Russia should he return to the White House.
At the same time, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warns that a rushed end to the war could create favorable conditions for Russia.
Zelenskyy stressed that the place of negotiations is secondary if Ukraine is in a weaker position, as this could lead to significant losses.
Meanwhile, CNN reported that the US is considering a scenario where both sides agree to a ceasefire along the current front line before peace talks begin. This could serve as a precondition for initiating dialogue between the countries.
