Ukraine must remain a top priority for European leaders and partners, despite other international crises, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte says during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
According to Rutte, he is concerned that the peace process and the €90 billion support package agreed by Europe could distract attention from the war in Ukraine and shift the focus to other global challenges.
"This focus on Ukraine should be our number one priority. It should be Ukraine first because it is crucial for our European and US security," the NATO Secretary-General stresses.
He also says he does not doubt that the United States would come to Europe's defense if necessary, emphasizing the importance of the transatlantic partnership.
Separately, Rutte notes Donald Trump's role in increasing the defense spending of European NATO countries, noting that it was his position that prompted the growth of military budgets.
Davos Forum
The 56th World Economic Forum began on January 19 in Davos, Switzerland, and will continue until January 23.
According to the organizers, about 3,000 representatives from more than 130 countries will participate in the event, including a high-level delegation from Ukraine. Among the main topics of the forum are the geopolitical situation, the development of artificial intelligence, and the reconstruction of Ukraine.
Earlier, The Telegraph, citing sources, wrote that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump may sign a so-called prosperity plan for Ukraine worth $800 billion during the Davos forum.
According to journalists, Zelenskyy planned a trip to Washington to finalize economic agreements and coordinate post-war security guarantees. However, partners from the so-called Coalition of the Willing convinced him to cancel his visit to the White House and suggested Davos as a more suitable venue for a meeting with Trump.
On January 20, Zelenskyy said he would attend the forum only if a prosperity plan and a bilateral document on security guarantees from the US were ready.
