Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has announced the appointment of a senior representative to lead the NATO Representation to Ukraine. Patrick Turner has been appointed, according to the NATO website.

“I am truly honoured to have been appointed as NATO's Senior Representative in Ukraine. I look forward to leading the NATO Representation and to working very closely with the Ukrainian authorities and with NATO Allies and partners to help deliver NATO support to Ukraine,” Turner says.

He will lead the NATO Representation in Ukraine and serve as the focal point for NATO's engagement with the Ukrainian authorities. Turner will coordinate NATO assistance and provide the Alliance with assessments of the situation in Ukraine.

Turner will take up his post in Kyiv in September 2024. The NATO Representation to Ukraine is currently headed by Karen McTeer.

Patrick Turner

Before his appointment, Patrick Turner served as NATO's Assistant Secretary-General for Operations and Defense Policy and Planning and held several senior civil service positions in the United Kingdom.

During his tenure as Assistant Secretary General, the campaign in Afghanistan ended.

The 75th NATO Summit was held in Washington on July 9-11. The summit participants decided to increase NATO's presence in Ukraine. In particular, they agreed to appoint a special representative in Kyiv.

Also during the summit, NATO partners agreed to create a structure to coordinate long-term assistance to Ukraine. It will be called the NATO Security Assistance and Training Unit for Ukraine (NSATU).
