Accession talks between Moldova and the European Union will not begin on July 4. The bloc's leaders have not yet made the necessary decision, according to Romanian President Nicușor Dan.

The new head of state of Romania commented on the claim that Moldova and the European Union would open the first negotiation cluster as early as July 4.

"That was a mistake," Dan emphasized.

He also clarified that the EU is keen to start the negotiations. At the same time, the Romanian president dodged questions about whether Moldova might be treated separately from Ukraine regarding the launch of accession talks.

The Romanian president did not explain his "mistake."

What Dan said

Yesterday, June 26, ahead of the EU summit, Romanian President Nicușor Dan stated that on July 4 Moldova and the European Union would open accession negotiations.

He clarified that the negotiations were to begin during the "EU–Moldova" summit in Chișinău.

Meanwhile, Hungary has blocked the start of accession talks for Ukraine. Sources cited by RBC-Ukraine indicate that Budapest can lift its veto only after next year's elections.
