Clothes moths are pests that are known for ruining the best clothes in any closet. How do you get rid of moths before they ruin your favorite clothes?

Signs of clothes moth infestation

If clothes moths have appeared in your home, you can identify them by two main signs: the presence of adult insects in dark corners and damage to clothing.

In case of suspicion, thoroughly inspect all fabrics and the places where they are stored. Move the clothing to a well-lit area for better examination. This will help disturb the moths, which dislike light and movement, and will allow you to begin their destruction.

Look for silk webs, tunnels in the fabrics, and small holes in natural fibers. If you see these signs, act immediately to prevent further spread of the pests.

Natural methods to combat clothes moths

Dry cleaning or hot water

One way to get rid of pests is to dry clean the affected items, which will prevent further damage. For clothing that can be washed at home, use hot water.

Freezing

You can also freeze the affected items. Place them in airtight plastic bags to prevent frost and condensation, which can damage the clothing. To kill moth eggs and larvae, place the clothing in the freezer for a week, then air it out.

Sunlight

Expose the affected clothing to direct sunlight. Ultraviolet rays can deter and kill clothes moths, their larvae, and eggs.

Steaming

Insects are sensitive to high temperatures. Anything hotter than 100 degrees Celsius will kill clothes moths by damaging their proteins. Use a garment steamer to effectively kill them, especially the larvae. Steam the clothing, paying special attention to places where moths may hide: pockets, cuffs, collars, and underarms.

Essential oils

Cedar, lavender, and eucalyptus oils are natural moth repellents. Apply them to cotton balls and place them in closets and drawers.

Herbal sachets

Fill sachets with dried herbs such as lavender, thyme, cinnamon, or cloves, which are known for their moth-repelling properties. Place them in areas where clothes moths like to hide.

How to prevent clothes moths

The first step in preventing clothes moths is to maintain cleanliness and order in your home. Regularly vacuum and clean the entire house, especially closets, storage areas, and upholstered furniture. This will help periodically remove moth eggs and larvae.

Use soap and water to clean surfaces and thoroughly vacuum cracks and crevices. Wash dirty clothes, especially those with sweat or food stains, as they can attract moths. These stains provide larvae with nutrients such as vitamin B and salt.

Store out-of-season clothes in airtight containers or garment bags with all seams tightly sealed.
