German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called for an end to the war against Iran and urged efforts to resolve it through diplomatic means, according to A-news.
During a press conference in Norway, Merz was asked whether Germany would push for direct talks with Tehran to restore passage through the Strait of Hormuz for oil tankers and cargo vessels. The chancellor’s response, however, was broader.
“We make every effort to bring the war in Iran to an end. We do everything we can diplomatically. We use all diplomatic channels and we hope that we will find ways to end this war as soon as possible-because it doesn't serve anybody and it harms many economically. It also harms us,” he said.
The German leader also stated that the conflict has directly affected Euro-Atlantic security and energy supplies.
He expressed serious concern over Iran’s related attacks targeting regional countries not involved in the conflict, as well as allied states, calling this a dangerous escalation. In addition, Merz emphasized the need for a plan to exit the war.
“We do share important goals of the US and Israel. Iran must not pose a threat to Israel and other neighbors. But with every day this war lasts, more questions are coming up. And one thing becomes increasingly clear: We need a convincing plan on how this war can come to an end,” he stressed.
Furthermore, the German chancellor warned against an open-ended conflict, stressing that Germany and its partners oppose the spread of the war across the region or the start of a civil war in Iran.
“If the territorial integrity or statehood of Iran were crumbling or if Iran were no longer economically viable, it would have severe impacts on us as well. So we need a good outlook for a peaceful order,” he concluded.
Ending the war against Iran
Recently, The Wall Street Journal published a report stating that advisors to US President Donald Trump are urging him to seek a plan to exit the war against Iran. These calls come amid rising oil prices and concerns that a prolonged conflict could have negative effects ahead of the midterm elections.
Trump himself publicly stated that the end of the war with Iran depends on his decision. According to him, it could conclude at any moment he chooses.
Meanwhile, Reuters reports that Trump’s aides are currently debating when and how to announce a victory over Iran.
