The media have misrepresented Ukraine's stance on potentially easing sanctions against Russia within the framework of a peace deal. In reality, Kyiv does not support the removal of sanctions and sees them as a key pressure tool, according to the Center for Counteracting Disinformation.

The Center clarified that it verified statements made by Ukraine’s Presidential Commissioner for Sanctions Policy, Vladyslav Vlasiuk, who confirmed that Ukraine does not support the lifting of sanctions against Russia at this stage.

"Unfortunately, manipulative headlines are more frequently read than the actual content. Sanctions have a clear purpose – if it is achieved, they may be reviewed. But it’s too early to talk about lifting them: first, we need steps from Russia. In the future, this will be a topic of discussion, but for now, sanctions are a key leverage," Vlasiuk said.

Background

Earlier, Politico reported, citing Vlasiuk, that Ukraine might consider easing sanctions against Russia if a peace agreement is reached. However, Vlasiuk emphasized that sanctions must remain a tool to pressure Russia into taking real steps to end the war.

Sanctions against Russia

Since the full-scale invasion began, multiple countries have imposed sanctions on Russia to isolate the country and weaken its economic and military capabilities.

We recently reported that the EU is already working on the 17th package of sanctions against Russia. The foreign ministers have discussed sending military assistance to Ukraine.
