The Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, captured by US special forces, could appear before a court in New York, US, as early as Monday, January 5, according to Sky News.

It is reported that Maduro is planned to be transported first to an airport in the New York area. After that, the captured dictator will be taken directly into the city, where he will be processed and transferred to a pretrial detention facility. His wife, Cilia Flores, will be held at the same facility, but in the women’s wing.

It is assumed that as early as Monday, January 5, or before that, Maduro will appear before a US court to hear the charges brought against him. A trial of his case will then follow.

The last known location of Maduro is aboard the US amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima. He was transported there from Caracas by special forces from the Delta Force unit.

On the night of January 2–3, the US carried out an operation in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. The operation involved 150 aircraft, the US Navy, drones, and CIA assets. There were no fatalities - only several wounded soldiers and one damaged helicopter.

As later became known, this was not a full-scale invasion - the objective of the US was the capture of the Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro. Along with him, his wife Cilia Flores, was also detained. US President Donald Trump released the first photo of Maduro after his capture, aboard the US amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima.

On the same day, the US Southern District of New York brought several charges against Maduro. The dictator was accused of conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine into the US, illegal possession of automatic weapons and destructive devices, and conspiracy to use such weapons against the US.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joked that the US should capture the Russian leader Vladimir Putin in the same way. Commenting on the detention of the Venezuelan dictator, Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the people of Venezuela should be able to live normal lives, as the Maduro regime has violated all principles.
