The United States has filed charges against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in the Southern District of New York. US Attorney General Pamela Bondi announced this on Twitter.
She stated that Maduro is accused of conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine into the United States, and illegal possession of automatic weapons and destructive devices. In addition, he is charged with conspiracy to use such weapons against the United States.
"They will soon face the full wrath of American justice on American soil in American courts. On behalf of the entire U.S. DOJ, I would like to thank President Trump for having the courage to demand accountability on behalf of the American People, and a huge thank you to our brave military who conducted the incredible and highly successful mission to capture these two alleged international narco traffickers," she wrote.
US operation against Venezuela
Earlier today, January 3, the United States carried out a series of strikes on Venezuela’s capital, Caracas. Explosions were reported across several parts of the city.
Local media reported that the attacks may have targeted the building of the Venezuelan parliament and the residence of the country’s Defense Minister, Vladimir Padrino López. Southern districts of Caracas were also reportedly hit, including the Fort Tiuna military complex and the Generalissimo Francisco de Miranda Air Base.
In total, at least ten sites in the capital were potentially affected.
Local sources also reported a strike on the La Guaira naval base in Vargas state, which houses the naval academy. Attacks were also reported at the port of Caracas and on Margarita Island in the Caribbean, where a significant portion of Venezuela’s military infrastructure is concentrated.
Later, US President Donald Trump confirmed the large-scale operation against Venezuela, declaring it successfully completed. According to him, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were captured and removed from the country.
