On the night of July 9, Russia carried out a combined strike using Shahed attack drones, cruise missiles, and Kinzhal missiles. The city of Lutsk came under a massive attack, with fires breaking out throughout the city.

Read everything known about the consequences of the enemy attack on Lutsk and other regions.

Key questions:

  • How many missiles and drones did the enemy launch last night?
  • What are the consequences in Lutsk, which was the main target?
  • Are there any casualties and where did fires break out as a result of the massive attack?
  • Why did Poland scramble its aircraft again?

The air raid alert began spreading across Ukrainian regions as early as last evening and was declared on a large scale twice when the enemy lifted MiG-31K jets into the air and launched Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles.

The threat lasted all night and was canceled around 6 a.m. Kyiv time.

Monitoring channels reported a large number of drones over Ukrainian regions. They moved through central regions, including Kyiv, mostly heading westward.

Explosions and air defense activity were also heard in the capital during the night. According to the Air Force, the main direction of the strike was western Ukraine. Lutsk was most frequently reported under threat. Explosions were also heard in Zhytomyr and Ternopil, and some drones reached Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk regions.

What the enemy used in the attack

According to the Air Force, the Russian troops attacked Ukraine with a total of 741 aerial attack assets. Among them were 728 drones — a new record for the number used by the enemy. There were a total of 13 missiles.

The head of communications for the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Yurii Ihnat, noted that most of the drones were not Shaheds — only a little more than 300 of those were recorded. A large number of them were destroyed.

According to the Air Force, the following were neutralized:

  • 684 out of 728 Shaheds and other drones;
  • 7 out of 7 Kh-101/Iskander-K cruise missiles;
  • 0 out of 6 Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles.

The main direction of the strike was Volyn, the city of Lutsk.

In total, strikes by enemy air attack assets were recorded in 4 locations, and the fall of downed assets in 14 locations.

Lutsk

The head of the Volyn Regional Military Administration, Ivan Rudnytskyi, confirmed that the region was subjected to a massive attack during the night.

"Almost everything was flying toward Lutsk. In total, about 50 UAVs and 5 missiles were in Volyn’s airspace. Information about impacts is being clarified," he wrote.

As for destruction in Lutsk, it is currently known that firefighting continues at the warehouse facilities of one of the city's enterprises, as well as at a garage cooperative.

Lutsk Mayor Ihor Polishchuk also confirmed fires and damage in Lutsk.

At 08:41 a.m., the State Emergency Service (SES) reported fires on the territory of a garage cooperative and at one of the private enterprises in the city.

Firefighters have already extinguished the fire. According to preliminary information, there are no casualties.

Khmelnytskyi region

As of now, following the night attack, damage has been reported to the roof and wall of a private house in the Khmelnytskyi district.

There is no information about injuries.

The regional administration promises to provide information on intercepted enemy targets later.

Prykarpattia

During the air raid alert, the Ivano-Frankivsk region also came under attack. The head of the regional administration, Svitlana Onyshchuk, stated that thanks to the excellent work of air defenders, casualties and destruction were avoided.

Kyiv region

During the shelling, a woman born in 1980 was injured in Brovary. She was hospitalized with a chest injury at the local hospital.

Brovary Mayor Ihor Sapozhko reported a large fire due to the fall of UAV debris at one of the enterprises in Trebukhiv.

"According to the SES — no casualties," he clarified.

The number of injured in the region has increased to two. A 61-year-old man was also affected. He suffered an acute stress reaction.

Poland scrambled aircraft

Poland again scrambled its aircraft amid Russia’s massive attack on Ukraine, according to the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces.

Around 04:00 a.m., Polish and allied aircraft were lifted into the air. Duty fighter pairs were involved, and ground-based air defense and radar systems reached their highest readiness level.

Safety measures were taken in areas bordering those under threat, the Polish military explained.

Zelenskyy reacted

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that many regions of Ukraine are currently dealing with the aftermath of the nighttime Russian attack.

And while the main strike was on Lutsk, damage was also recorded in the Dnipropetrovsk, Zhytomyr, Kyiv, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi, Cherkasy, and Chernihiv regions.

"This is a telling attack – and it comes precisely at a time when so many efforts have been made to achieve peace, to establish a ceasefire, and yet only Russia continues to rebuff them all. This is yet another proof of the need for sanctions – biting sanctions against oil, which has been fueling Moscow’s war machine with money for over three years of the war. Secondary sanctions on those who buy this oil and thereby sponsor killings. Our partners know how to apply pressure in a way that will force Russia to think about ending the war, not launching new strikes. Everyone who wants peace must act," he said.

Reminder: This is not the first time Lutsk has been targeted by the enemy recently. For example, on June 6, 2025, the city was also attacked, resulting in a strike on a multi-story residential building, which was partially destroyed.

Additionally: Kyiv also recently suffered a large-scale Russian attack. On July 4, Russian troops used more than 500 drones and missiles in an aerial assault. Most of them were aimed at the capital. More than 20 people were injured, and three were killed.
