Lithuania, as a reliable NATO ally, may consider allowing its territory to support a US operation against Iran, states Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda, reports Delfi.
According to the Lithuanian leader, the status of a reliable and responsible NATO ally obliges the country to support its partners in critical moments.
Logistical support
Nausėda emphasized that due to Lithuania’s considerable geographical distance from the "hot spots" of the Middle East, this does not involve direct participation in combat operations, but rather logistical support.
"We will consider this possibility. Most likely, it will not be provided for any direct military purposes, but for logistical ones,” the president stressed.
Military scenario: Aircraft and bases
Earlier, Lithuanian Army Commander Raimundas Vaikšnoras spoke more specifically. He noted that the country could provide its territory for basing US bombers and fighter jets involved in operations against Iran.
However, the commander clarified that this is still a "hypothetical scenario,”"s the relevant political decisions have not yet been made.
Involvement of European countries
Previously, Spain and Italy decided to strengthen their military presence in Cyprus. This followed an attack by an Iranian drone on a British base on the island.
To provide air defense and support civilian evacuation, Spain is deploying the frigate Cristóbal Colón, which will operate alongside the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and the Greek Navy.
At the same time, Italy is preparing to deploy naval forces and air defense systems in the region to protect against missiles and drones.
