Residents in several regions of Latvia and Estonia were warned in the morning of May 3 about a possible drone threat amid Russia's ongoing attack on Ukraine, according to the Latvian National Armed Forces and Estonia's Ministry of Interior.

As reported, residents of Estonia's Võru and Ida-Viru counties received warnings from the military about a drone threat at around 3:00 a.m.

At 5:30 a.m., the Defense Forces lifted the alert, stating that there were no threats in Estonian airspace.

The Ministry of Interior later clarified that the warning was issued "in connection with Russia's military actions against Ukraine," including the possibility that drones could enter Estonian airspace.

At around 4:00 a.m., a similar warning was issued to residents of Latvian towns Alūksne, Balvi, Ludza, Rēzekne, and Krāslava.

A few hours later, Latvia's armed forces reported that the potential threat had passed.

"The National Armed Forces, together with NATO allies, continuously monitor airspace to ensure the ability to respond immediately to any potential threat. While Russia’s aggression against Ukraine continues, there is a possibility of repeated cases where a foreign unmanned aerial vehicle enters or approaches Latvian airspace," the authorities said.

Attacks on Ukraine

As a reminder, on the night of May 3, Russia attacked Ukraine with an Iskander-M missile system ballistic missile and 268 strike drones. Ukraine’s air defense forces managed to intercept the majority of enemy UAVs.

At the same time, a ballistic missile strike and 19 strike drones were recorded hitting 15 locations, while debris from downed drones fell at one location.

In particular, Russian occupation forces once again attacked civilian and port infrastructure in Ukraine's Odesa region with drones overnight. There are reports of fatalities and injuries.
