Ukraine's Ambassador to the US, Olha Stefanishyna, called on the Trump administration to reinstate sanctions on Russian oil and to prevent Russia from profiting through Iran's actions, according to Stefanishyna's post on X.
"1/2 Russia must not be allowed to profit from the actions of its ally Iran. We urge the U.S. administration to reinstate sanctions on RU oil & petroleum products," she wrote.
Stefanishyna added that it is in the shared interest of Kyiv and Washington to limit the funding that Russia uses for its attacks on Ukraine and to provide assistance to America's adversaries.
She emphasized that if Russia understands that destabilization and fomenting war are profitable, then the world will soon face new problems.
"Notably, the Russian representative has already called the oil waiver a 'cooperation'" the ambassador concluded.
What preceded
A day earlier, the US Treasury Department again issued a license allowing the sale, delivery, and offloading of Russian oil and petroleum products loaded onto vessels as of April 17, 2026. This authorization is valid until May 16.
Earlier in March, the US took a similar step to stabilize oil prices, which had risen due to the war in Iran and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
At the same time, just a few days ago, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent asserted that Washington did not intend to extend the waiver for Russia.
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright also expressed doubt that the permit to purchase sanctioned Russian oil would be renewed.
