Ukraine's forces continue clearing Kupiansk of Russian troops, but some "small pockets" of them remain in the city, the official in charge of communications for the joint forces, Viktor Trehubov, said.

Trehubov spoke about the situation on Suspilne TV and during a telemarathon.

He explained that the clearing operation in Kupiansk is proceeding slowly because civilians are still present. Urban combat is always gradual, but overall the situation in the city is positive.

"Russians remain in a few small pockets within the city. It may take another week or two to clear these areas, but considering that the Russians have no way to break out, and despite a few attempts, the situation is quite clear," Trehubov said.

He added that the occupiers are surrounded in the city with no prospects of relief. Only a few dozen remain.

"Even Russian efforts are focused not on Kupiansk itself but on the left bank of the Oskil River, where they are trying to do something. But inside the city, the Russians remain surrounded and are being gradually eliminated," the spokesperson said.

Ukrainian operation in Kupiansk

On December 12, Russian occupiers were encircled in Kupiansk, which, according to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, had supposedly been "liberated" twice. The command of the 2nd Corps of the National Guard of Ukraine, Khartiya, reported a successful Ukrainian counterattack near Kupiansk.

At least 200 Russians were blocked in the city, and Ukrainian defenders cleared the Yuvileynyi residential area of enemy soldiers. During the counteroffensive, Russian forces lost over 1,000 soldiers killed.

The operation has been planned and ongoing since autumn.

Ukrainian troops in Kupiansk also destroyed a gas pipeline that Russian occupiers were using to try to infiltrate the city, effectively blocking their route.

Active fighting continues, with surrounded Russian units putting up "very fierce" resistance. However, Ukraine’s forces are proceeding with operations to eliminate them.

Recently, it was reported that Ukrainian troops pushed Russians out of Kupiansk and now control almost 90% of the city's territory.
