Discussions in the West about the possibility of transferring nuclear weapons to Ukraine are "absolutely irresponsible," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov states, according to Reuters.

Last week, the New York Times newspaper reported that some Western officials suggested that US President Joe Biden might transfer nuclear weapons to Ukraine.

Peskov said the comments are attributed only to anonymous sources, and those making them do not feel "a shred of responsibility." Kremlin spokesman noted that the West must listen carefully to Vladimir Putin.

Previously, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev stated that if the West were to supply nuclear weapons to Ukraine, Moscow could consider such a transfer as an attack on Russia, which would provide grounds for a nuclear response.

As the New York Times recently reported, the Joe Biden administration is trying to provide Ukraine with as much assistance as possible before Donald Trump takes office as president.

The media also recalled that Ukraine wants to receive an invitation to join NATO as a security guarantee. However, this was not achieved during Biden's term, and an invitation is unlikely under Trump's presidency.

For this reason, a number of American officials suggested that Biden might return the nuclear weapons that were removed after the collapse of the USSR to Ukraine. "That would be an instant and enormous deterrent. But such a step would be complicated and have serious implications," the New York Times emphasized.

Ukraine gave up its vast nuclear arsenal under the Budapest Memorandum on December 5, 1994, which was supposed to guarantee the country's security. The nuclear weapons were then handed over to Moscow. Now, the Kremlin continuously issues threats to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine.

Earlier, The Times reported that Ukraine could develop a nuclear bomb within several months. This could happen if newly elected US President Donald Trump halts military assistance to Kyiv.
