Speaking before the US Congress, King Charles III of the United Kingdom sent a veiled message to President Donald Trump and Republicans not to cut aid to Ukraine, according to Politico.

Speaking before the US Congress, Charles III mentioned Ukraine in the context of Western support for the US following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Politico believes that in doing so, the British monarch sent a signal to US President Donald Trump.

The agency notes that British monarchs convey their political messages in coded form, and Charles’s mention of 9/11 deserves an explanation.

"In the immediate aftermath of 9/11, when NATO invoked Article 5 for the first time … we answered the call together, as our people have done so for more than a century, shoulder to shoulder," the King says.

Politico believes that this is a carefully crafted response to Trump and his allies in Congress, indicating that, despite the president’s repeated statements in recent weeks, NATO did indeed come to America’s aid in its hour of need.

The agency notes that Charles intends to visit the 9/11 Memorial in New York, so the terrorist attacks that took place there nearly 25 years ago are extremely relevant to him.

Politico emphasizes that the British king expresses a completely different position than Trump, who has continuously criticized Ukraine and its president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, with whom Charles has had private meetings on multiple occasions in recent years.

The King's remarks came amid shifts in US policy regarding continued support for Kyiv, particularly following the Trump administration’s reduction of military aid to Ukraine.

King's visit to US

King Charles III of the United Kingdom and Queen Camilla arrived in the U.S. on April 27 for an official state visit. This is the first visit by a British monarch to the US in 19 years, aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.

The meeting between Charles III and Trump in the Oval Office was decided to be held behind closed doors. British officials were the ones who insisted on this.

This was due to fears of a repeat of the scandal involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in February 2025 at the White House.

Western media reports that Trump broached sensitive topics from the very first minutes of his meeting with the King.

According to a lip-reading expert, the US President made an alarming statement about Vladimir Putin’s plans for war.
