The US and Europe could impose severe sanctions on Russia if it refuses to agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine. These restrictions would be tougher than ever before, stated US Special Envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, on Fox Business.

Kellogg reminded that a bill for new sanctions against Russia has already been prepared in the US Congress, with the support of over 70 senators. The sanctions could primarily target the Russian Central Bank or the shadow fleet, which transports most of Russia's oil abroad.

He noted that approximately 70% of Russian oil is shipped through the Baltic Sea, and the US could begin targeting the shadow fleet.

"We've alerted President Putin. These sanctions are very serious, they are harder than we've ever seen before. The Europeans are on the same way," Kellogg said.

The Special Envoy also added that the new German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, takes a very tough stance on new sanctions. Meanwhile, Europe is standing up in defense of Ukraine.

Sanctions against Russia

Recently, Senator Lindsey Graham introduced a bipartisan bill in Congress proposing new sanctions against Russia.

In particular, Graham suggests imposing secondary tariffs on any country that buys Russian oil, gas, uranium, or other goods.

The US had planned to impose serious sanctions on Russia if the Kremlin rejected the idea of a ceasefire with Ukraine for at least 30 days. However, for now, it seems that such a significant decision has been postponed until possible negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow in Istanbul, scheduled for May 15.
