The UK has publicly backed a peaceful and democratic transfer of power in Venezuela to a legitimate government reflecting the will of the people, following reports of the fall of Nicolás Maduro’s regime, according to a post by Prime Minister Keir Starmer on X.

London’s stance on the events in Venezuela

Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that the UK has long supported a transfer of power in Venezuela and never recognized Maduro as the legitimate president.

He added that in the coming days, the UK government will consult with US partners on the situation, aiming for a safe and peaceful handover of power to a government that reflects the will of the Venezuelan people.

Keir Starmer’s statement: "The UK has long supported a transition of power in Venezuela. We regarded Maduro as an illegitimate President and we shed no tears about the end of his regime. I reiterated my support for international law this morning. The UK government will discuss the evolving situation with US counterparts in the days ahead as we seek a safe and peaceful transition to a legitimate government that reflects the will of the Venezuelan people."

London’s support signals the UK’s commitment to regional stability and emphasizes the need to uphold international law during the transfer of power.

The UK intends to closely coordinate with the US and other partners to ensure a safe and transparent transition, guaranteeing that the new government will be legitimate and representative of the Venezuelan people.

As a reminder, French President Emmanuel Macron announced on X that, according to opposition calculations, Edmundo González could become the new president of Venezuela following the 2024 elections.

At the same time, Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez stated that the country will never become a colony of a foreign state and called on the US to return President Nicolás Maduro to Venezuela.
