Edmundo González could become the president of Venezuela, as opposition forces claim he won the 2024 presidential election, according to a post by French President Emmanuel Macron on X.

Macron believes that opposition figure Edmundo González could be the next leader of Venezuela.

According to the French president, the upcoming transitional period should be peaceful, democratic, and respectful of the will of the Venezuelan people.

“We hope that President Edmundo González Urrutia, elected in 2024, will be able to ensure this transition as quickly as possible. For now, I am negotiating with our partners in the region,” Macron wrote.

He added that France is fully mobilized and vigilant, particularly to guarantee the safety of its citizens during these uncertain hours.

Later, Emmanuel Macron posted again on X, noting that he had spoken with opposition figure María Corina Machado and fully supported her call for the release and protection of political prisoners under Nicolás Maduro’s regime.

“Like all Venezuelans, she can count on France’s support in defending a peaceful, democratic transition that fully respects the sovereign will of the Venezuelan people,” he said.

Earlier, media outlets reported that the situation in Venezuela following the capture of dictator Nicolás Maduro by US forces could take three paths: a constitutional transfer of power, a military coup, or the disintegration of the regime.

The Venezuelan opposition considers Edmundo González, who is in exile, to be the legitimate president of the country.

What happened in Venezuela

On the night of January 2–3, the US carried out a series of strikes on Venezuela’s capital, Caracas. Explosions were heard across different parts of the city. The targets included government buildings and military bases.

Later, US President Donald Trump confirmed the large-scale operation against Venezuela, declaring it successfully completed. According to him, Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro and his wife were detained and removed from the country.
