The government has approved a draft agreement between Ukraine and Japan for a grant of 8.8 billion Japanese yen ($58 million), according to Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.

Shmyhal stated that the funds will come from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and be directed toward reconstruction projects.

Japan’s support for Ukraine

From the first days of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Japan condemned the aggression and joined international sanctions against the Russian Federation (RF). Tokyo has been providing Ukraine with financial, humanitarian, and material-technical assistance, including funds for economic support, infrastructure restoration, and humanitarian needs.

Japan also supplies body armor, drones, vehicles, and demining equipment, though constitutional restrictions prevent it from delivering lethal weapons.

In January of this year, Japan imposed additional sanctions on Russia, targeting not only Russian companies and individuals but also entities in other countries.

Additionally, last year, Japan joined the coalition to return Ukrainian children deported by Russia, an initiative launched by Ukraine and Canada.
