Italy's proposal for security guarantees for Ukraine, similar to NATO's Article 5, is currently the main topic of discussion among allies, according to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Meloni says that the Italian proposal, based on a mechanism inspired by NATO's Article 5, was currently the main one on the negotiating table, adding that it was a potential contribution to peace made by their country and that she thought they should be proud of it.

The Italian Prime Minister believes that there is now a chance for a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia.

She says that finally, after 3.5 years during which Russia had shown no signs of dialogue and had simply demanded Kyiv’s surrender, there was a glimmer of hope for negotiations.

According to Meloni, the situation has changed due to several external and internal factors.

The Italian Prime Minister adds that those glimmers of hope had been made possible, of course, by the initiative of the US president, but even more so by the heroic resistance of the Ukrainian people and the united support of Europe, despite public opinion, which had not always been convinced.

Security guarantees for Ukraine

On August 18, US President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders at the White House. The main topic of discussion was security guarantees for Ukraine.

The allies considered the possibility of security guarantees similar to NATO's Article 5, but outside the Alliance.

During the talks, US President Donald Trump confirmed US participation in these guarantees, but stressed that the main burden should fall on European partners and ruled out sending American troops to Ukraine.

At the same time, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni proposed to European leaders a plan to provide security guarantees to Ukraine in the form of collective assistance, which does not include NATO membership.
