According to the outlet, the target was the Assembly of Experts building in the city of Qom, central-western Iran. This body is responsible for selecting Iran’s next leader following the removal of Ali Khamenei.

An unnamed Israeli security official told Ynet that the IDF struck the building during the vote to choose Khamenei’s successor. The Assembly of Experts has 88 members, but journalists noted that far fewer people were inside the building at the time.

Meanwhile, a separate Iranian report stated that the building was empty and no one was inside.

Assassination of Khamenei

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was eliminated within the first 24 hours of the joint US-Israeli operation Epic Fury, which began in February 2026.

According to the Financial Times, Khamenei’s assassination was the result of a years-long Israeli intelligence operation, with full control over Tehran’s network of street cameras being a key component.

Complex algorithms analyzed schedules, routes, and personal data of the dictator’s entourage, allowing the exact timing of Khamenei’s presence in his office on the day of the strike to be determined down to the minute.
