Today, Saturday, June 27, Israel carried out a strike in southern Lebanon. The attack came a day after the two countries signed a security agreement brokered by the United States, according to Reuters.

The Lebanese state news agency says an Israeli drone struck the town of Nabatieh al-Fawqa.

The area is located outside the security zone marked on a map previously published by Israel. The map outlines an expanded area in southern Lebanon controlled by Israeli forces (meaning the strike occurred outside the area Israel considers its security zone).

For their part, Israeli military officials confirmed to Reuters that the strike was carried out by a drone. They said the target was an individual who posed a threat to Israeli forces but did not provide additional details or evidence.

Background

Yesterday, June 26, Israel, Lebanon, and the United States signed a framework trilateral agreement that envisaged the partial withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon.

According to a statement from the US State Department, the agreement includes restoring Lebanon's sovereignty, disarming Hezbollah, providing immediate humanitarian assistance, and increasing the Lebanese army's combat readiness with US support.
