The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has announced the effective closure of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, TRT Haber reports.

The Iranian IRGC also stressed that vessels attempting to pass through could face harsh retaliatory action.

The statement says that all ships heading to or departing from ports linked to the "Israeli-American alliance" are banned from transit, regardless of their route.

It also reported that three container ships from different countries attempted to pass through the strait via established corridors in the morning. Still, after intervention and warnings from IRGC naval forces, they were forced to change course and turn back.

In addition, the Corps said that claims by the US administration that the Strait of Hormuz remains open do not reflect the real situation, emphasizing that it is effectively closed.

Situation around the Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the key routes for global oil trade: in 2025, around 13 million barrels passed through it daily, or roughly 31% of seaborne supplies.

Amid the effective blockade of the strait, global oil prices have surged sharply, leading to higher fuel costs.

The escalation in the Middle East has caused serious concern among world leaders, who condemned Tehran’s attacks on civilian targets and called for an immediate halt to the mining of the waters and missile strikes.

Leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Japan were the first to declare readiness for tough action, with Canada later joining them.

The number of countries supporting increased pressure on Iran has expanded significantly. For details on which countries have joined this coalition, see the RBC-Ukraine report.
