The situation in the Strait of Hormuz is escalating — several vessels have reported coming under fire while attempting to pass through this strategic route, according to Reuters and the BBC.

According to Reuters, at least two merchant vessels reported being fired upon while attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, April 18.

The incident was reported by three maritime security and shipping sources. The circumstances and consequences of the event remain unclear.

At the same time, according to the BBC, one tanker came under fire from boats linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the incident took place about 20 nautical miles northeast of the coast of Oman. Preliminary reports indicate that neither the tanker nor its crew were harmed.

Situation in the Strait of Hormuz

Amid the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, Iran announced the resumption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. However, the United States has not lifted its naval blockade.

Despite announcements about reopening, shipowners are acting cautiously. Some tankers, after attempting to pass through the strait, are turning back or stopping near the entrance.

Later, Tehran stated that transit had returned to a regime of strict military control. This was explained by US actions and a naval blockade, which Iran called "piracy."
