Internet cable breaks between Sweden and Finland – Helsingin Sanomat
Specialists discovered a new cable break between Sweden and Finland. The incident occurred on land in Finland, according to Helsingin Sanomat.
The media reports that the internet cable rupture happened on the night of December 3 on Finnish territory. The police currently suspect sabotage. Swedish authorities have been informed.
According to a preliminary investigation, the break has affected 6,000 private customers and approximately 100 business clients of Globel Connect.
Not the first incident
At the end of November, it was reported that the C-Lion1 underwater data transmission cable, which runs through the Baltic Sea between Finland and Germany, was broken. This disrupted telecommunications between the two countries.
At the time, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius suggested the damage might have been deliberate.
One suspect in that case was the Chinese cargo ship Yi Peng 3, operated by a Russian captain. Authorities flagged the ship's unusual route and detained it for inspection by the Danish Navy. The vessel had departed from the Russian Baltic port of Ust-Luga on November 15, and reports of the cable break emerged on November 18.
The operator of the C-Lion1 cable announced that repairs, expected to take 5–15 days, were underway. The 1,173-kilometer cable, operational since 2016, provides direct connectivity between Finland and Central Europe.
Later, another cable break was discovered in the Baltic Sea between Lithuania and Sweden.
