Indian national killed fighting for Russia in Ukraine
The Indian government has reported the death of one of its citizens who was recruited by Russia to fight in the war in Ukraine, Sky News reports.
According to the media, the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the death and noted that another Indian citizen is undergoing treatment for injuries at a hospital in Moscow.
The Ministry stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has "strongly taken up" the issue with the authorities in Moscow and the Russian Embassy in New Delhi. It also reiterated the urgent need to demobilize Indian citizens serving in the Russian armed forces.
"We are working with the Russian authorities for early transportation of the mortal remains to India," the Ministry said.
Recruitment of Indians by Russia
In June last year, after the deaths of two Indian nationals in the Russian military, New Delhi demanded that the Kremlin return recruited citizens.
Reuters previously revealed that during a visit to Moscow, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought the swift release of Indians from the Russian army.
Additionally, beyond Indians, Russia has also attempted to recruit Serbians and Ukrainians living in occupied territories.
