Indian Prime Minister to seek release of Indian citizens from Russian army during his visit to Moscow
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will seek the swift release of Indians from the Russian army during negotiations in Moscow, Reuters reports.
In recent months, several cases have emerged where Indians were enticed to Russia with promises of lucrative jobs or education, only to end up fighting against Ukraine. In May, Indian police arrested four individuals connected to a human trafficking network behind this practice.
During his visit to Moscow next week, the Indian Prime Minister is expected to discuss the early demobilization of his citizens who were "misled" about serving in the Russian army.
It is known that at least four Indian citizens have died in the war, prompting Modi's government to call for an immediate end to such recruitment and the swift release of Indians serving in the army.
Foreign Minister Vinay Kwatra stated that India estimates that 30 to 40 of its citizens may already be serving in the Russian army.
"All efforts have been made that Indian nationals return as soon as possible," he said.
Kwatra also added that 10 Indians have already returned home.
Last month, after the deaths of two Indians in the Russian army, New Delhi began demanding that the Kremlin return the recruited citizens.
In addition to Indians, Russians also attempted to recruit Serbs and Ukrainians living in the occupied territories.
