Hollywood star Kristen Stewart admitted she’s increasingly thinking about leaving the United States. She cites political developments during Donald Trump’s presidency and the current conditions of the American film industry as the reasons.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, referencing Stewart’s interview with the British publication The Times.
Currently, Stewart splits her time between Los Angeles and New York, but she stressed that she’s unsure whether she will stay in the US long-term.
"I can’t work freely there. But I don't want to give up completely. I'd like to make movies in Europe and then shove them down the throat of the American people', the actress said.
Stewart also mentioned her directorial debut, The Chronology Of Water, which had to be filmed in Latvia.

She explained that making an independent project like this would be virtually impossible in the US, as the system often leaves little room for auteur cinema, especially for new directors.
Stewart also commented on Donald Trump’s statements about potential tariffs on films produced outside the United States.
She called such initiatives a serious threat to the industry.
"Reality is breaking completely under Trump. But we should take a page out of his book and create the reality we want to live in," the star said.

It’s worth noting that Stewart’s interview comes amid discussions of Trump’s new initiatives regarding foreign film production.
In particular, in May 2025, he announced the start of a process to impose 100% tariffs on all foreign films, citing national security concerns and a desire to bring film production back to the United States.
These statements sparked criticism from members of the film industry and California authorities.
