Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s office will review a decision on the country’s potential withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO), said Minister in charge of the Hungarian Prime Minister’s office Gergely Gulyás, Politico reports.

According to Gulyás, the US withdrawal from WHO encourages Budapest to proceed cautiously with a similar decision, but Hungary will still consider it.

"We may come to the conclusion that we do not have to do it, we may come to a different decision, of course, but it is certainly worth considering,” he said.

Meanwhile, Russian State Duma Deputy Speaker Pyotr Tolstoy also commented on the possibility of leaving WHO.

"It is time to thoroughly investigate WHO's activities in Russia. During the investigation, Russian membership should at least be suspended. Or, better still, we should say goodbye altogether," he stated.

US withdrawal from WHO

On January 21, US President Donald Trump signed an official document initiating the country’s withdrawal from the WHO.

He also revoked a letter sent by his successor, Joe Biden, to the UN Secretary-General on January 20, 2021. In that letter, Biden had suspended Trump’s initial order, issued during his first term, which had started the US withdrawal process from WHO.

Following the US, Argentina also decided to suspend its WHO membership.
