Hungary to block Ukraine issue at EU summit, it may be delayed - Journalist reveals
Hungary will block the issue of starting negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union at the EU summit next week. Therefore, the summit may be prolonged, according to the correspondent of "Radio Svoboda" Rikard Jozwiak.
EU ambassadors discussed the preparation for the EU summit on the evening of December 5.
"Predictably, Hungary against everything related to the support of Ukraine," the correspondent noted.
Jozwiak suggests that negotiations regarding Ukraine will last both days of the summit. It may likely be prolonged until Saturday, December 16.
It should be noted that the summit of EU leaders is scheduled for December 14-15. During the summit, European leaders are to decide on the integration prospects for Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia.
"Green light" for Ukraine
On November 8, the European Commission recommended to the EU Council to start negotiations with Ukraine on accession. According to Ursula von der Leyen, Ukraine has already implemented 90% of the reforms expected by the EU. However, Kyiv must continue with further reforms.
However, Hungary stated it would oppose the EU starting negotiations with Ukraine on accession. Viktor Orban's party submitted a resolution to the parliament against negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU.
In Ukraine and Brussels, it is believed that Hungary cannot indefinitely block Ukraine's accession to the EU. Ukraine is already negotiating with the Hungarian government to resolve the disputes.
