Hungary’s PM calls Ukraine’s EU accession economic suicide

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has described Ukraine’s accession to the European Union as economic suicide, ORIGO reports.
According to him, Hungary does not support Ukraine’s integration into the EU or its accelerated accession.
He added that Europe has decided the war in Ukraine "must continue," and that sanctions against Russia should remain in place. Eventually, Russian energy sources will be phased out, and then something that happens to the European economy will happen, Orbán said.
The Prime Minister complained that if Ukraine and Russia had reached peace, the EU would lift sanctions against Russia, energy would be cheaper, and the economy would grow.
Ukraine's accession to the EU
Ukraine is currently actively moving towards EU membership. After being granted candidate country status in 2022 and officially launching the negotiation process in 2024, the country has focused on adapting its legislation to EU norms.
As of now, Kyiv intends to start negotiations on all six thematic clusters by the end of 2025. At the same time, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that some European leaders are blocking Ukraine's EU accession talks.
Meanwhile, the EU Ambassador to Ukraine, Katarína Mathernová, answered when Ukraine could become a member of the EU.
