Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has accused the so-called pro-war political elite and their controlled media of attempting to disrupt the planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, according to Szijjártó on X.

The Hungarian minister stated that from the moment the Budapest Peace Summit was announced, "it was obvious that many would do everything possible to stop it from happening."

According to him, the "pro-war political elite" and their media always act in a similar way ahead of events that may prove decisive on issues of war and peace.

"It’s the same story before almost every European Council meeting, before decisions on sanctions or on the European Peace Facility," Szijjártó noted.

"It will be no different this time. Until the Summit actually takes place, expect a wave of leaks, fake news, and statements claiming that it won’t happen," the Hungarian foreign minister concluded.

Trump–Putin Meeting in Budapest

Recently, US President Donald Trump announced a meeting with Kremlin head Vladimir Putin, which was expected to take place in Budapest.

However, over time, the Kremlin began looking for excuses to avoid negotiations, putting forward its own conditions and explanations.

For example, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia would not agree to a ceasefire until the so-called “root causes of the conflict” are addressed.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously explained the reasons behind this behavior by Russian officials. He added that Moscow began moving away from diplomacy as soon as the United States softened its rhetoric, particularly regarding the supply of long-range Tomahawk missiles.

As RBC-Ukraine reported on October 22, Trump said he had not yet decided whether the meeting with Putin would take place. However, he promised to announce his plans in two days.
