The acting chargé d’affaires of Hungary in Ukraine was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs following the detention of Ukrainian cash couriers, according to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.

The Hungarian diplomat was informed that Ukraine considers these actions unlawful and demands immediate consular access to the detained couriers, their prompt release, and the return of state property.

"The taking of hostages and theft of property will not go unanswered. Ukraine reserves the right to take responsive measures, including initiating sanctions and other restrictive actions against those involved in the abduction of our citizens, as well as using necessary international legal mechanisms," the ministry added.

The Foreign Ministry also stressed that attempts by the Hungarian government to involve Ukraine in its electoral campaign are unacceptable. Ukraine expects Hungary to return to a constructive path of cooperation.

Detention of cash couriers

Previously, Hungarian special services detained seven employees of Oschadbank along with a cash shipment (40 million USD, 35 million EUR, and 9 kg of gold). The bank vehicles were en route from Austria to Ukraine.

The funds were taken to Hungary’s Anti-Terrorism Center, and Ukrainian consuls were denied access to the couriers.

Official Budapest justified its actions by citing alleged "suspicion of money laundering."

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian side called the incident "state banditry" and described it as the taking of hostages.
