Hungary may increase purchases of Russian gas. A corresponding memorandum was signed with Gazprom, according to Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó and Gazprom.

The Hungarian official held talks with Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller.

According to Szijjártó, "reliable gas supplies" to Hungary are guaranteed by the country's cooperation with Russia and Gazprom.

The official reminded that Hungary signed a long-term gas supply contract back in 2021, which "ensures supply security."

"Thanks to this, in 2024, our country will receive 6.7 billion cubic meters of Russian gas at competitive prices. Today, MVM and Gazprom signed an agreement to maintain this favorable practice for Hungary," Szijjártó said.

He did not disclose the details of the agreement. However, Gazprom clarified that Szijjártó and Miller signed a memorandum of understanding that allows for the possibility of increasing Russian gas supplies to Hungary.

Hungary imports Russian gas

Hungary is one of Russia's key trading partners in Europe. Budapest refuses to provide military assistance to Ukraine, disrupts EU support for Ukraine, and continues to strengthen ties with Moscow.

In particular, Hungary is actively purchasing Russian gas. After 2024, when the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine will cease, the Hungarian authorities are counting on imports through Türkiye.
