Hungary could lose right to vote during Ukraine's EU accession talks - Stefanishyna
Leaders of the European Union countries could have deprived Hungary of the right to vote during the consideration of the issue of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the bloc, says the Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine, Olha Stefanishyna, during a telethon.
"The decision was made. But I want to say that even if the situation had been more critical than it had turned out yesterday, EU member states, 26 of them, would have been ready to deprive Hungary of the right to vote," the minister said.
She noted that such an official procedure does exist, although it has not been used yet.
According to Stefanishyna, this made the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, leave the room while other leaders voted to open negotiations with Ukraine.
Negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU
Recall that yesterday, on December 14, during the European Council summit, it was decided to open negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union.
While leaders were discussing the issue, the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, "took a coffee break."
Later, the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, revealed that he was the one who suggested this idea to his Hungarian colleague.
