How many cups of coffee per day increase risk of a heart attack or stroke
Moderate coffee consumption won't harm your health. There is a safe dose, as excessive caffeine can strain the heart and damage blood vessels, according to The Sun.
What dose is dangerous
Research has shown that consuming more than 400 mg of caffeine daily raises blood pressure and heart rate, causing the heart to work harder.
Experts from a medical college in India stated that this amount is equivalent to about four cups of coffee, 10 cans of Coca-Cola, or two energy drinks.
Data from 92 healthy adults indicated that people recover more slowly after intense exercise.
One in five study participants consumed more than 400 mg of caffeine daily, putting healthy individuals at risk of high blood pressure.
Dr. Nency Kagathara explained that regular caffeine consumption can disrupt the parasympathetic system, leading to increased blood pressure and heart rate.
Excessive caffeine intake can cause side effects such as headaches, anxiety, and nausea.
The study revealed that people who consumed more than 600 mg of caffeine daily—roughly six servings of coffee—had significantly elevated blood pressure levels.
Why high blood pressure is dangerous
High blood pressure increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, dementia, stroke, and kidney failure.
Victoria Taylor, a dietitian from the British Heart Foundation, mentioned that a moderate amount of tea or coffee—4-5 cups a day—is suitable for most people.
However, some individuals are more sensitive to caffeine and may experience palpitations, so it might be wise for them to avoid it.
While coffee can raise pulse and blood pressure due to caffeine stimulating the body, if you drink it regularly and don't have hypertension, it shouldn't harm you. However, you should consult your doctor if you have high blood pressure, tachycardia, or angina.
Caffeine in large doses or in individual cases can cause excessive stimulation, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and digestive issues.
It's not recommended to drink coffee if you have gastrointestinal problems, kidney diseases, or duodenal ulcers. Additionally, coffee can deplete calcium from the body and has a diuretic effect, so if you enjoy coffee, make sure to monitor your hydration levels.
