Houthis strike Israel's Tel Aviv with new type of drone, casualties reported
One person was killed and eight injured in an explosion in Tel Aviv on Friday morning. The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack, reports Bloomberg.
According to Israeli emergency services, the explosion occurred near the Tel Aviv waterfront and the US Embassy. The strike killed a 50-year-old man and injured eight others.
Houthis said they had attacked Israel's commercial capital with a new type of drone that is difficult to detect by radar. The militants threaten to strike again in the city and other regions of the country.
According to the Israeli army, the explosion was caused by a drone that was not neutralized by air defense because of the human factor. The Israeli military stated that the sirens were not activated.
“If confirmed, it would mark the first deadly attack on Israel by the Houthis, who have also been assaulting ships much closer to home in recent months,” the media said.
Other Houthi attacks
Since November last year, Yemen's Houthis have been attacking ships in the Red Sea region. They explain their attacks on commercial shipping as a “sign of solidarity” with the Hamas group in the Gaza Strip, where Israel is conducting a military operation against terrorists in response to a massive attack in October 2023.
Recently, the Houthis fired on two tankers, one of which was heading from Russia to China.
A month earlier, the Houthis attacked a Ukrainian ship in the Gulf of Aden with missiles.
