Over 50 Russian deputies have been sentenced to 15 years in prison in absentia for their alleged role in aiding Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in starting a full-scale war in Ukraine, reports the press service of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU).

What occurred

On February 15, 2022, the deputies endorsed a resolution requesting Putin to recognize the "independence" of the temporarily occupied regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.

By February 22, they voted to ratify the "agreement on friendship, cooperation, and mutual assistance" between Russia and Luhansk People's Republiс (LPR)"

The press service notes that Russia's higher military and political leadership later used this decision as a formal basis for launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Potential consequences

In accordance with Part 3 of Art. 110 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, the court sentenced the deputies of Russia to 15 years of imprisonment in absentia.

"In addition, the indictments against 23 more Russian deputies have been sent to court," the SSU adds.
