Hegseth calls Trump 'best negotiator' to find peace in Russia-Ukraine war

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, ahead of a meeting of NATO defense ministers, stated that US President Donald Trump is allegedly the only person in the world capable of bringing Ukraine and Russia to the negotiating table.
"You saw yesterday Mr. Trump, who himself is the best negotiator on the planet, bringing two sides together to find and negotiate peace. Which is ultimately what everyone wants," Hegseth said.
According to the Pentagon chief, today's NATO defense ministers’ meeting will feature "honest conversations."
He also added that a strong Alliance will defend the free and democratic world, and the US will maintain its leadership role.
Trump’s calls with Putin and Zelenskyy
On December 12, talks were held between Trump and Putin. After that, the US President had a phone conversation with Zelenskyy.
Speaking to journalists in the Oval Office of the White House, Trump stated that Ukraine’s return to its 2014 borders appears unlikely.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, during a visit to Ukraine, emphasized that Trump seeks a swift end to the military conflict. Additionally, a strategic partnership agreement between Ukraine and the United States was announced.
Commenting on Trump’s call with Putin, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte noted his "impression" of the beginning of negotiations on Ukraine.
