The process of Greenland gaining independence from Denmark needs to be accelerated, particularly regarding the organization of a referendum, said Erik Jensen, the leader of the ruling Siumut party, in an interview with DR.

Jensen had changed his stance and now supports activating Article 21 of Greenland's Self-Government Act, which allows for a referendum on independence and negotiations with Danish authorities.

The leader of the Siumut party emphasized that while a commission studying the path to independence has already been approved, parallel steps could be taken by activating Article 21 and initiating talks with the Danish government. He noted that this would form the basis of the party's campaign.

In his view, activating Article 21 and holding negotiations with Denmark should lead to a referendum in Greenland, and the process should not take long. He expects it to happen within the next electoral term. However, Jensen stressed that it should be conducted in an informed manner so that the population fully understands the consequences.

It is worth noting that parliamentary elections in Greenland are scheduled for March 11.

Greenland’s independence

Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede stated in his New Year's address that he intends to achieve independence from Denmark.

His remarks came in response to statements of US President Donald Trump suggesting that Greenland should become part of the United States.

Recently, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that Trump is indeed interested in purchasing Greenland, as it aligns with US national interests.
