Greenland is open to hosting an additional US military contingent, and talks on the matter are already underway, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said, CNN reports.

Rutte said that discussions on deploying additional US troops in Greenland are fully open and face no obstacles.

He added that agreements enabling the additional deployment of forces already exist.

What preceded this

Earlier, the wife of US President Donald Trump's deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller, Katie Miller, published an image of a map of the island colored in the colors of the US flag.

Later, US President Donald Trump told journalists that he intends to "talk about Greenland in 20 days" and again stressed that the United States absolutely needs this Danish territory, claiming that the island is surrounded by Russian and Chinese fleets.

At the same time, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that if the United States attacks Greenland, it would mean the end of NATO.

Amid threats from the United States, Denmark has strengthened the island's defenses. According to opinion polls, the island's residents, who have autonomy within Denmark, are also not enthusiastic about Trump's idea.

Toward the end of his first presidential term, Trump attempted to purchase Greenland, but Denmark refused. However, since returning to the White House in January 2025, the US president has repeatedly stated that the United States should "obtain Greenland," allegedly for security reasons.
