German Chancellor Friedrich Merz believes that a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine is possible within the next two days, reports Bild.

“I have high hopes that a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine will be reached this weekend,” Merz said.

He added that, given the three-day ceasefire announced by Russia, there is a “strong chance” it could be extended to 30 days, after which “peace deal negotiations could begin.”

Merz said he had written a joint communiqué with French President Emmanuel Macron, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. It is “largely identical” to the proposal made by the United States.

“We very much hope it will be accepted by the Russian side as well. The ball is entirely in Moscow’s court,” the chancellor added.

Stubb also talks about a ceasefire

Meanwhile, Finnish President Alexander Stubb also says that Ukraine and Russia will soon reach a ceasefire agreement, according to media reports. Stubb adds a ceasefire in Ukraine can be ideally announced by the weekend.

Russian attacks during Putin’s so-called ceasefire

Russian leader Vladimir Putin unilaterally declared a ceasefire with Ukraine for three days, on May 8-10. Despite the Kremlin announcement, fighting on the front line continues, with an increase in attacks.

On the morning of May 8, it was reported that Russian forces had dropped nearly 100 guided aerial bombs on the Sumy region overnight.

Russian troops also launched a missile strike on the Poltava region yesterday.
