Germany's FM: Ukraine's victory over Russia is NATO's shared interest
NATO has a shared interest in Ukraine’s victory over Russia and remains the world’s most powerful defense alliance, stated German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, according to WAZ.
Germany’s position and the role of the US
According to the outlet, the German minister said the world has become significantly more dangerous, requiring even greater unity among allies.
He stressed that despite political statements, the United States continues to provide substantial support that enables Ukraine to effectively resist aggression. Germany has now become Ukraine’s key partner in Europe.
"President Zelenskyy confirmed this to me during my visit to Ukraine. I assured him that Germany will remain the strongest donor," Wadephul said.
Future of the Alliance
Germany’s top diplomat acknowledged that discussions about a possible US withdrawal from NATO are causing concern, as the Alliance is critical to the security of all its members.
"We have a shared interest in Ukraine winning the military confrontation with Russia. We should not question this, but build on our successes," the minister said.
He also recalled the recent expansion of the bloc with Sweden and Finland, as well as the readiness of member states to invest 5% of GDP in their defense capabilities.
Threat of NATO collapse and alternative alliances
Recently, the future of the Alliance has come under question due to Washington’s tough position.
In particular, US President Donald Trump has officially stated that he is considering withdrawing the country from NATO over the bloc’s refusal to support the American operation in Iran.
Against this backdrop, retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg has called for the creation of a new defense system involving trusted allies, including Ukraine.
At the same time, the European Union has begun developing alternative defense plans in case of the Alliance’s collapse, with Ukraine also seen as a key element of a new security architecture.
