Germany's federal election scheduled for Feb. 23, 2025
Lawmakers, as well as representatives of the three leading German political parties, have decided on the date of the early federal election. The new date was a compromise between center-left Chancellor Olaf Scholz and conservative opposition leader Friedrich Merz, according to Politico.
Federal snap election in Germany will be held on February 23, 2025.
It is expected that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will have a vote of confidence by the end of December, which will allow for a new election in February. Last week, his three-party coalition collapsed after months of growing disagreements. The main disagreements were over spending and how to support the weakened German economy.
Initially, the chancellor intended to hold a vote of confidence on January 15, which would have allowed him to organize a new election by the end of March. However, under pressure from the leaders of other political forces, including Friedrich Merz of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the head of government decided to speed up the process, which eventually led to a new election date.
According to Bild, citing sources in government circles, he will request a vote of confidence from the Bundestag on December 16.
Early election in Germany
After the collapse of the coalition, Olaf Scholz declared he was ready to submit the issue of confidence in the government to the Bundestag. Opposition parties in Germany do not rule out the possibility of forming a coalition with the Chancellor's party but without his participation.
