Germany is in talks to purchase several thousand European-made missiles. The planned purchases include Ukraine's Bars cruise missile drones, Bloomberg reports.
Germany to buy Bars missiles
Germany has decided to replenish its missile arsenal, including with Bars cruise missile drones made in Ukraine, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
The weapons are needed to deter Russia, as Germany is at the end of the waiting list for US Tomahawk cruise missiles.
Sources familiar with the negotiations added that officials are discussing the joint production and purchase of the Bars cruise missile with Ukraine.
The name of its manufacturer has not been disclosed, the outlet noted.
Other missiles
According to the sources, German Defense Ministry officials are in talks with US defense startup Covenant. They want to purchase thousands of Anthem ground-launched cruise missiles with heavy payloads.
Other manufacturers include:
-
Dutch company Destinus SA, which makes Ruta cruise missiles;
-
German-British defense startup Hypersonica, which is developing the HS1 hypersonic missile.
Germany's missiles
Currently, the German Armed Forces have only one cruise missile in their arsenal: the Taurus. It is air-launched and has a range of around 500 kilometers. It is manufactured by MBDA and Saab AB.
Bars cruise missile drone
Ukraine's Bars cruise missile drone is powered by a jet engine and carries a 22.5-kilogram warhead. It has a range of up to 700 kilometers.
However, developers have increased its range to 1,000 kilometers, boosted its warhead weight to 60 kilograms, and raised its speed to more than 700 km/h.
