Germany opposes Zelenskyy's proposal to expel Russia from the UN Security Council
Germany does not support Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's proposal regarding the UN Security Council. Berlin does not want to exclude Russia, according to German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
Baerbock hinted that Germany does not support the exclusion of Russia from the UN Security Council nor the proposal to deprive Russia of its veto power in the Security Council.
"We do not support this, and I have explained this to my Ukrainian counterparts," said Baerbock.
However, the minister criticized Russia for abusing its veto power in the UN Security Council.
"That's why reforms are more important than ever. But you must be realistic; this won't happen tomorrow," the German Foreign Minister added.
To remind, the UN Security Council consists of five permanent members: the United States, China, the United Kingdom, France, and Russia as the successor to the USSR, as Moscow claims. The UN General Assembly elects another ten members for two-year terms based on geographical representation. Five of the ten non-permanent members are elected each year.
What Zelenskyy proposes
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the UN General Assembly on September 19. He criticized the international organization for allowing Russia to remain in power despite its aggressive war against Ukraine. Zelenskyy called for the exclusion of Russia from the UN Security Council.
