Germany makes new statement on potential peacekeepers in Ukraine
There are discussions in Germany about possible post-war scenarios for Ukraine. In particular, whether Bundeswehr soldiers should participate in a possible peacekeeping mission, Tagesschau reports.
Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius does not rule out the possibility of Germany's participation in a peacekeeping force for Ukraine.
“We are preparing, we are playing out scenarios, but we are doing it confidentially... Now is not the time to discuss scenarios publicly,” said the German Defense Minister.
Pistorius noted that the answer to the question of military participation in the peacekeeping force will ultimately depend on “what the conditions will be.”
“If there is a ceasefire, and if someone - whoever it may be - decides to undertake peacekeeping measures with military means, it will depend on the type of mandate, scope, requirements, and the consent of the warring parties," the Minister explained.
It is worth noting that the opinion of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz differs from Pistorius' statement.
Yesterday, on December 4, during a speech to the Bundestag, Scholz categorically rejected Germany's participation in possible peacekeeping missions in Ukraine.
Instead, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock also said yesterday that the German military could be involved in maintaining peace in Ukraine.
A similar initiative was previously discussed by the new EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.
In her opinion, Europe could play its part if a ceasefire is reached with the need to send troops to verify compliance.
