German troops could join peacekeeping efforts in Ukraine - Foreign Minister
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said that the German military could be involved in maintaining peace in Ukraine, according to the Berliner Zeitung.
According to her, this is possible if a ceasefire is reached between Ukraine and Russia.
This issue was raised during the NATO meeting in Brussels.
Baerbock emphasized that Germany is ready to support all initiatives that will contribute to long-term peace, including security guarantees, international peacekeeping missions, or increased military assistance to Ukraine.
According to her, the presence of German soldiers will be possible only if a real truce is established.
A similar initiative was previously discussed by the new EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.
She named the military of European countries that are ready to discuss the possibility of deploying their contingents to ensure peace in Ukraine as potential participants in such peacekeeping missions.
This summer, French President Emmanuel Macron also suggested that NATO forces could be used to support Ukraine. Although this sparked a broad discussion among the allies, it was not about direct participation in combat, but about the work of military instructors. At that time, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Canada declared their readiness to discuss the details of this proposal.
The idea of involving European troops is likely to be included in Trump's plan. The Telegraph wrote that he may call on the European Union and the United Kingdom to send their military to secure a buffer zone between Ukraine and Russia along the demarcation line if a truce is reached.
