Chancellor Scholz: Deployment of German military to Ukraine is 'out of question'
The deployment of German ground troops in Ukraine is currently not possible, states German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, according to N-tv.
What preceded it
Today, Germany's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stated that German troops could be involved in supporting peace in Ukraine.
According to her, Germany is ready to support any initiatives that will contribute to long-term peace, including security guarantees.
Scholz's reaction
During a speech to the German government, Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that Germany will not send troops to Ukraine.
“This is out of the question,” Scholz said.
He added that Baerbock's statement was merely a diplomatic response to a hypothetical question regarding German troops in Ukraine.
Foreign troops in Ukraine
At the beginning of the year, French President Emmanuel Macron suggested the possibility of involving NATO forces to support Ukraine. This idea sparked widespread discussion among Ukraine's allies, even though it was not about participating in combat but rather the deployment of military instructors. However, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Canada expressed their willingness to discuss options.
After Donald Trump's victory in the US election, these discussions resumed. According to media reports, Paris and London may potentially lead a foreign military contingent.
At the same time, Britain's Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, emphasized that the country's stance has not changed, and London has no intention of sending troops to Ukraine.
